Basil’s Blog: Cushions, Canine Crushes & Social Outings

It’s been a busy few weeks since I last put paw to laptop and what an exciting time it’s been. I am especially thrilled to report that I am the latest ‘cushion star’ for Nikki Szabo’s Mad About Dogs collection – and in not just one but two hand-painted designs! Should you like the look of my squishy face and care to share your home with me, cushions are priced £45 each from Nikki-Szabo.co.uk. The ‘BASIL’ pictured left is me as a puppy, and the ‘BASILEUS’ on the right shows me, as I am now and using my pedigree name.

When I’ve not been busy admiring my own mush on my new fancy cushions, I’ve been crushing on my style icon – Bodhi of Menswear Dog. I can’t get enough of this NYC-dwelling Shiba Inu decked out in the finest men’s fashion. I especially love his ‘Dog Punk’ shoot, which plays homage to Daft Punk’s Get Lucky’. Menswear Dog recently announced the launch of a 2014 calendar, which has been earmarked for my Christmas list to keep a track of my busy social life.

Speaking of social outings, I recently spent an evening hobnobbing with fashionistas and their fancy pooches at an event hosted by Pets Pyjamas. By Pets Pyjamas I am not talking about onesies for dogs but a fantastic online department store stocking thousands of products from no less than 126 suppliers, catering to your dog’s every need and to suit all tastes and budgets (from £1.95 for a packet of Dogrritos to £8,600 for the daddy of dog beds!). They even have an extensive lifestyle department for pet lovers too. Sign up to their PetsPoints scheme and you’ll earn as you spend – bank enough points and you and your furry one could enjoy a spa day at Harrods.

While my chaperone quaffed on ‘Woof-Woof’ cocktails, I chomped on organic biscuits from Doggy Bags Bakery, played in the doggy den and had my picture taken by Tilly’s Studio (see me posing above). Shopping aside, Pets Pyjamas offers a host of useful services for the modern dog like myself including a directory of pet friendly venues and services such as restaurants, cafes, dog walkers and training many with an exclusive deal or discount, and they even have a pet concierge, who will do the necessary legwork to book a getaway for you and your dog – call 0845 154 2104. Discover more at PetsPyjamas.com.

My own nugget of a pet friendly venue is Essex Pooch Palace, a 5-star hotel just for dogs, which I got to stay at last weekend while my pet parents went off gallivanting. My action-packed stay included walks on their beautiful farm, endless hours spent playing with my new furry friends and watching Disney movies during down time in my stylish little room – they were even happy to serve grated cheese on my dinner, which is my favourite. It was doggy heaven and it's also another one of my Bucket List - 'sleep in a boutique dog hotel'! Check out Essexpoochpalace.co.uk for more details.

I’ll be back again soon but in the mean time you can follow me @BasilBarkarama on Twitter or @Barkarama on Instagram.
